NEW YORK, Sept. 11, 2017 -- On Tuesday, October 3, the largest CFA member society in the world—CFA Society New York (“CFANY”)—will celebrate its 80th Anniversary with the society’s Annual Dinner. The commemorative occasion will take place at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and promises to draw over 400 CFA charterholders and financial leaders from around the world.
Per tradition, a dinner presentation and networking reception will bookend the annual event’s award ceremony.
“We are inspired by the honored award recipients,” said Philip J. Taylor, CFA, Board Chairman of CFA Society New York. “And grateful for their achievements in raising standards of professionalism in our industry.”
Among the honorees is TIAA President and Chief Executive Officer Roger Ferguson, recipient of the prestigious Irving Kahn Lifetime Achievement Award.
“Roger Ferguson has been a leader in the financial services community for over 30 years,” said TIAA’s Kevin Maxwell, CFA. “His tenacity and thoughtfulness were on full display as the world markets were in chaos following the events of September 11, throughout which he was serving as Vice Chair of the Federal Reserve. Over the last 10 years he has served the academic, medical and philanthropic industries by leading TIAA into a near trillion-dollar asset management firm. I cannot think of a more deserving individual to receive the award than Dr. Roger Ferguson.”
Established in 2011, the Irving Kahn Lifetime Achievement award is granted to a member of the investment profession who has made distinctive contributions to the industry and whose exemplary achievement, excellence of practice, and true leadership have elevated the integrity and competence of the profession.
CFA Society New York will also debut a new accolade—the Humanitarian Award—and bestow Bruce and Avis Richards with inaugural honors.
Bruce Richards is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Marathon Asset Management, a global credit manager with approximately $13 billion of capital under management. Avis Richards is the award-winning Founder and CEO of Birds Nest Foundation/Productions, a creative group that produces digital media content for charitable organizations that enables non-profits to tell their stories.
CFA Society New York’s Humanitarian Award is granted to senior finance professionals whose works and deeds have served to improve the quality of our community and have inspired us to greater heights.
CFANY Board Member and Head of the Nominations Committee, Robert Discolo, CFA, lent some insight.
“The decision to choose the Richards’ as honorees was a very easy one. Bruce has created a firm where one of the principal core values is social responsibility.
“It is not only about financial support. Bruce and Avis are personally engaged imaginatively, constructively, and systematically, working to attack the fundamental problems of humanity. The work they do positively affects the lives of thousands of people.”
75 years ago, CFA Society New York (formerly known as New York Society of Security Analysts) and its founder, Benjamin Graham, helped found what is now known as CFA Institute.
“We are honoring the legacy of this venerable and vibrant society by continuing to raise the bar for the investment profession,” Mr. Taylor began.
“We are both fortunate and tremendously appreciative of the opportunity to celebrate our anniversary, and our accomplishments this year, with a community of colleagues who represent the apex of excellence and ethics in our industry.”
CFA Society New York is a leading voice within a network of CFA Societies in 150 countries, representing over 145,000 CFA Institute members worldwide. CFANY works in conjunction with CFA Institute to develop the industry’s future professionals and collaborate with industry leaders to raise the standards of professionalism in the investment management industry.
