Burger King faced backlash in South Korea after saying it is ending the sale of Whopper burgers. Moreover, the announcement caused huge confusion among customers since the food item is the brand’s flagship sandwich.
Burger King revealed the plan to discontinue Whopper burgers in the country through an ad. This angered customers further as even before the announcement; they were already irritated that the fast-food chain kept raising the prices of these iconic burgers.
Whopper is Saying Goodbye After 40 Years
According to The Korea Bizwire, Burger King Korea posted a notice on its website to inform customers that it is ending the sales of its Whopper after 40 years. The company also thanked everyone “who loved the Whopper all this time.”
The note threw customers into a frenzy, with many expressing great disappointment. Others doubted the announcement and assumed the discontinuation of Whoppers could just be a marketing stunt.
It was reported that there were customers who directly contacted Burger King stores to ask about the matter. The staff taking their calls told them that Whoppers would still be available beyond April 14, the date indicated on the website as the final day of Whoppers’ availability.
Truth About the “End of Sales” Notice
While it was reported that Burger King’s headquarters was silent on this matter, its Korean unit’s website posted a follow-up message where the chain seems to have reiterated it is discontinuing the sale of Whopper. However, at the end of the note, the restaurant added, “We ask for your anticipation of the various promotions we are preparing for the Whopper’s 40th anniversary.”
The last line appears to be a clarification phrase stating that Burger King is only revamping its signature sandwich rather than pulling it out from the stores. The Korea Herald reported the last message was a hint that Whopper is here to stay and will only be upgraded in a special way to mark its 40th anniversary.
