Berkshire Hathaway Inc bought over $4.1 billion of stock in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. in a rare foray into the technology sector by billionaire Warren Buffett's conglomerate.
In a US SEC regulatory filing, Berkshire said it owned about 60.1 million of Taiwan Semiconductor's American depositary shares as of Sept. 30.
The company also has new, smaller stakes in building materials company Louisiana-Pacific Corp and the financial services company Jefferies Financial Group Inc.
With Berkshire Hathaway’s $296 billion portfolio under management, its investment in Taiwan Semiconductor will account for just 1.4 percent of that total.
Meanwhile, Apple continues to represent nearly 42 percent of Berkshire Hathaway’s portfolio.
