Brexit Series: PM May suffers first resignation since Brexit backing by cabinet

Shailesh Lakhman Vara, the minister of State at the North Ireland Office has submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Theresa May. He became the first minister of Prime Minister May’s cabinet to resign over the forged draft Brexit agreement, which Prime Minister announced to have the backing of the cabinet. The North West Cambridge shire MP has been at the Northern Ireland Office since January when Karen Bradley became Northern Ireland Secretary.

In his resignation letter, Mr. Vara reportedly expressed his dissatisfaction over the draft agreement, suggesting that the agreement doesn’t allow the United Kingdom to become a sovereign state independent of the European Union.

This is a major sign that the domestic political trouble surrounding the Brexit agreement is hardly over and it would not be easy for the Prime Minister to pass the agreement through the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

In the worst case scenario, there would be challenges to her leadership and position as the Prime Minister, if not an outright snap election.

Meanwhile, the Pound continues to trade with wild swings amid Brexit news. The pound is currently trading at 1.288 against the USD.
