Following the gameplay reveal of “Borderlands 3,” most fans have been quick to announce that they’re ready to buy the game and can’t wait for it to be released in September. So far, Gearbox has kept its promise that the looter shooter will be a refreshing entry to the series, with emphasis on solo players being catered than ever before, IGN reported.
“[Borderlands 3] is the most compelling single-player experience that we’ve ever put together as a studio. The story and the delivery and the drama of it is a lot more heightened. I think people will be very surprised with some of the twists and turns and where the story takes this game,” art director, Scott Kester said.
This decision is reassuring for the community as the trend of a title transitioning to being a live service is proliferating within the gaming market. “Borderlands 3” is shying away from that and is instead focusing on narrative-driven gameplay. This isn’t to say that the looter shooter will be geared towards this approach and this approach alone.
“Borderlands 3” still has cooperative element weaved within its gameplay. There’s even a split-screen option for those who want to play with their friends on console. Kester said that what they really want gamers to experience is variety. Solo missions, cooperative play, and split-screen views provide that experience strongly, with the last part the most surprising.
A split-screen option nowadays is so archaic that it’s rare for a game to include it in its system, let alone for a title like “Borderlands 3” that has a massive following. But its inclusion is a testament to Gearbox’s dedication to delivering a refreshing yet familiar feel for its fans. And that’s just one aspect of it.
A large variety of enemies, vehicles, gameplay, and sprawling options of firearms are other aspects of “Borderlands 3” that will make it stand out in the looter shooter genre. And even if the third installment pales in comparison to “Destiny” and “Waframe” graphics-wise, it still won’t matter much for gamers.
After all, a title isn’t only judged by how well it’s been designed but by the overall experience it will deliver. And so far, it seems that “Borderlands 3” will be quite popular when it hits the market this September. It’s just a shame that it will be an EGS exclusive for six months, a fact that still looms over the game even with the recent gameplay reveal taking the hype train to new heights.
