“Borderlands 3” still hasn’t dropped despite its predecessor now approaching seven years old. This is despite the fact that Gearbox admitted that they are making the third entry for the series.
So what’s taking the gaming studio so long in developing “Borderlands 3?” Apparently, the lawsuit involving Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford is the cause for the massive delay. For the unaware, Pitchford is currently facing a rather messy case as he’s been accused of paying himself $12 million from the company’s own funds, Forbes reported.
The money was supposedly going to the development phase of “Borderlands 3” but Pitchford pocketed it instead. This whole thing started when Gearbox sued former company lawyer Wade Callender for “fraud and breach of fiduciary duty.” In response, Callender countered with a lawsuit of his own fired directly at Pitchford.
Aside from pocketing the above-mentioned fund, the lawyer also accused Pitchford of possessing child pornography that is apparently stored in a USB drive. What’s more, Callender also accused the Gearbox CEO of throwing parties where adults are exposing themselves to minors. With these damaging narratives being thrown back and forth, it’s safe to assume that it’s disrupting the creation of “Borderlands 3.”
This is especially true if the allegation regarding the $12 million funds is proven. For their part, Gearbox has dismissed Callender’s claims as nothing more than the act of a disgruntled employee, Kotaku reported. The studio added that they are willing to engage Callender in court to validate that the claims he’s making are a complete fabrication. As for “Borderlands 3,” it’s still unclear when it will be released given that the company is hesitant to even speak the title.
This is quite detrimental for the third entry as a whole given that the looter-shooter genre is experiencing its golden age. “Destiny” and “The Division” are currently two titles that are dominating this niche, with EA/Bioware soon to dip their hands on the market when “Anthem” launches on Feb. 22. With the competition brewing, developers over at Gearbox are facing tremendous pressure to deliver “Borderlands 3” in spectacular fashion. Hopefully, this messy lawsuit can be dealt with accordingly so the third installment can proceed with no more disturbance.
