Benedict Cumberbatch ended his BAFTA awards drought after finally taking home not one but two trophies from the British Academy Television Awards. The “Avengers: Endgame” actor picked up the Best Leading Actor for “Patrick Melrose,” and as the producer of this same show, he also bagged the Best Mini-Series award.
Cumberbatch admitted that he did not expect to win in the best lead actor as he was convinced that Hugh Grant will get it. In his unprepared speech, he thanked his colleagues and mentioned his co-nominees but seemed to have forgotten to thank his wife, Sophie Hunter. Does this mean that the divorce rumors are true?
“I thought Hugh Grant was going to win, so I didn’t bother to prepare a speech,” Gold Derby quoted Cumberbatch as saying after accepting his award on stage. “That was my only joke I’d thought of and I didn’t even say it on stage – and it’s not even a good joke.”
In any case, there are stories floating online that Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter called it quits some time ago, and as proof, he was allegedly spotted alone in his home early this week. As per the supposed witnesses, the actor is definitely back on the market after splitting with his wife of four years.
It was said that as the news of Cumberbatch’s divorce spread, fans wanted to know his number as they seem to be interested to connect with him now that he is rumored to be single again. However, these stories were proven wrong when he actually mentioned his wife after the BAFTA Awards ceremony. This was recent, just two weeks ago when he belatedly thanked Sophie at the after-event press conference for the winners of BAFTA 2019.
Finally, Benedict Cumberbatch even responded that he made a promise to his wife - that they would dance - if he wins. This was his answer when asked how he is planning to celebrate getting the awards. Moreover, no one would say they are divorced as he and his wife even left the hall together as they hurriedly head home after the ceremony.
The couple is in a hurry, perhaps to find a place to dance as he mentioned, to celebrate. “I’m looking for somewhere I can dance without being filmed,” he told the press. “That would be good.”
