In a noteworthy event in Beijing, Baidu's CEO Robin Li unveiled Ernie 4.0, the latest evolution in generative AI models. Demonstrating advanced memory capabilities, Ernie 4.0 impressed the audience with its real-time writing abilities, culminating in a freshly generated martial arts novel.
Additionally, Ernie 4.0 showcased its ability to generate advertising posters and videos, reports Reuters.
Ernie 4.0's Comparable Capabilities
Baidu claims that the capabilities of Ernie 4.0 are on par with OpenAI's ChatGPT-4 model. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Baidu's AI research and development, positioning the company as a direct competitor in the AI market.
With a focus on memory capabilities, Ernie 4.0 demonstrates its ability to generate real-time content. CEO Robin Li showcased the model's proficiency during the event by creating a martial arts novel, captivating the audience with its dynamic written output.
Baidu, known for operating China's largest internet search engine, has emerged as a leading player in AI models within the country. This recognition comes amidst the global fascination surrounding AI technology, sparked by OpenAI's ChatGPT model released last year.
In March, Baidu launched ErnieBot, a chatbot powered by Ernie, although investors were disappointed with the presentation limited to pre-recorded demonstrations. However, Baidu's continuous advancements in AI models have garnered attention and solidified its position in the AI industry.
"Baidu envisions a future where we join forces with all to drive the evolution of AI, empowering every individual with access to state-of-the-art productivity tools and ensuring that the benefits of these advancements are shared by all," a PR Newswire press release in March quoted Li.
Dominance in Language Models
In August, Baidu and other companies received government approval to release AI products to the public. China boasts at least 130 large language models (LLMs), accounting for 40% of the global total. This places China just behind the United States, which holds 50% of the LLM market, according to data from brokerage CLSA.
China's dominance in language models has fueled the country's AI development. A significant portion of global language models being Chinese underscores China's progressive stance in adopting and advancing AI technologies.
Large language models and generative AI represent a new technological paradigm that presents unprecedented opportunities for global enterprises.
