BYD, China's electric vehicle giant, appears ready to disrupt the electric motorcycle market with newly discovered patents for high-performance scooters. Featuring up to 25 kW motors and 9 kWh batteries, these designs hint at affordable, feature-packed models that could reshape the industry.
BYD's Patents Reveal High-Performance E-Scooters
The patent drawings were spotted by Motorcycle Sports and are said to depict a motorcycle with a power output ranging from 15 to 25 kW (20 to 35 hp), a battery capacity of up to 9 kWh, and a displacement between 250 and 350 cm².
The inclusion of dual front brake rotors and other high-performance components suggests that these electric scooters can reach speeds that are greater than those of many of the more modest models available.
Coaxial Motor Design Simplifies Suspension
It seems like Zero Motorcycles' highest-performance flagship platform has the motor positioned coaxially with the swingarm, as reported by Electrek. That arrangement also aids in simplifying the suspension by keeping the tension on the belt or chain constant even as the suspension bends.
As an example, BYD's flagship Han EV sells for less than US $25,000 in China, and it is known for producing affordable electric vehicles that are yet packed with features.
LiFePO4 Batteries Likely to Power BYD's E-Bikes
