BYD has officially unveiled its first hybrid pickup truck, the Shark, in Brazil. With 429 horsepower and advanced hybrid technology, the Shark is positioned to challenge the longstanding reign of the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger in one of Brazil’s most competitive markets.
BYD Launches Shark Pickup in Brazil to Challenge Industry Giants
In an effort to take on the best-selling Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger, BYD, a Chinese company, debuted its Shark pickup truck in Brazil. In BYD's plans to become a top-selling carmaker in the coming years, the Shark will be a key player.
Brazil: A Critical Market in BYD's Global Expansion
In its pursuit of further ascent atop the worldwide sales charts, BYD regards Brazil as an essential component of its international expansion, as highlighted by Electrek.
Early this month, pre-orders began at $66,700 (BRZ 379,000), even though BYD hosted a Shark launch event in Goiania on Saturday.
Powerful Hybrid Performance Sets Shark Apart
There are a total of 429 horsepower available in the Shark plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). Its 29.58 kWh BYD Blade Battery allows it to travel up to 62 miles (100 km) on electric power alone and more than 520 miles (840 km) when combined.
Even though diesel and gas-powered trucks are still the most popular in Brazil, BYD is confident that their hybrid pickup will win over customers.
Agriculture Sector Key to Shark's Success
BYD anticipates that Brazil's thriving agricultural sector will contribute to expansion. According to the carmaker, roughly 70% of Shark sales will come from commercial customers, such as mining company Vale.
Agricultural pickup trucks have a huge potential market, according to Henrique Antunes, BYD's sales director in Brazil (via Bloomberg).
Demand Surges Beyond BYD's Expectations
As Antunes put it, "those who are not in the agricultural sector often look to the agricultural sector to buy a pickup truck." This includes clients who aren't even in the agricultural business.
Demand for the pickup has already surpassed that of the Yuan Pro, its predecessor. One thousand to one thousand and five hundred Shark models have been reserved since pre-orders began on October 3. There were around 600 pre-sales of the Yuan Pro.
Shark to Join Brazil’s Top-Selling Pickups
Antunes predicts that the Shark will sell 10,000 to 15,000 units each year, making it one of the five best-selling mid-size pickups in Brazil.
At the moment, the most popular pickup trucks are the Chevrolet S10, Ford Ranger, and Toyota Hilux. About $38,700 (or BRZ 220,000) is the starting price as well. A solar-charging kit, a portable charger, and one year of complimentary insurance are all freebies that BYD is throwing in with pre-orders.
BYD Expands Brazil Lineup with Shark's Arrival
Following a 700% increase in sales during the first nine months of 2024, BYD anticipates that the Shark will further accelerate momentum.
As part of its strategy to increase its footprint in Brazil, BYD has launched six new vehicles there, the Shark being the sixth of these. Commercial competitors have already responded to its expanding market share with steep price cuts.
