Australian dentists issue urgent health warning over ‘homemade toothpaste’

Homamade toothpaste

Dentists are warning Australians to avoid homemade and fluoride-free toothpaste if they want to avoid issues with their teeth, amid a rise in demand for herbal toothpaste.

Homemade recipes” of toothpaste that don‘t contain fluoride shared on TikTok are racking up millions of views.

According to Bupa’s head dentist Dr. Cathryn Madden, the recipes, which include lemon, baking soda, salt, and charcoal can be bad for the teeth and cause other issues.

Dr. Madden noted that just because these ingredients are natural, it doesn’t mean they’re good for the teeth.

She pointed out that lemon is acidic, while baking soda and salt are abrasive, and can strip off the enamel from the teeth or cause discoloration.

Meanwhile, hydrogen peroxide can burn the gums and soft tissues, while vinegar can also cause damage.

Dentists reported that many are already using alternative toothpaste or filtering fluoride out of their water, with some also choosing to do the same for their children.

Wearing away the enamel increases the risk of cavities, discoloration, and sensitivity.

She added that once the enamel is gone, it can’t be grown back.

Dr. Madden advised talking to their dentist before changing their dental hygiene routine, especially when involving children and sticking with a commercial toothpaste containing fluoride.
