Apple is reportedly intensifying its efforts to develop foldable devices. It aims to unveil a 20.3-inch hybrid by late 2025, followed by a foldable iPhone in late 2026. This move signifies a strategic shift towards innovative, cutting-edge technology, potentially reshaping the tech landscape.
Breaking Boundaries: Apple's Journey into the Foldable Device Domain
According to a recent investor letter obtained by 9to5Mac, Apple is increasing its efforts to develop foldable gadgets. According to Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu, Apple plans to mass produce a 20.3-inch foldable device in late 2025, followed by a folding iPhone in late 2026.
Ming-Chi Kuo earlier predicted that Apple was developing a 20.3-inch foldable MacBook with a delivery date of 2027. According to The Information, Apple has been working on a foldable iPhone since 2018 and has two prototypes.
One resembles a standard phone, while the other resembles a foldable iPad. However, a Chinese blogger said Apple's prototypes failed quality checks and were "temporarily shelved."
According to the source, Apple's industrial design team aimed to produce a half-thin gadget like the current iPhone models so that it would not be excessively thick when folded shut. They've also looked into adding screens that face outwards so they can be seen while the device is closed. However, the actual realities of components such as batteries and displays have made it challenging for engineers to achieve these ambitious objectives.
According to The Information, Apple halted the development of the foldable iPhone around 2020 in favor of an inward-folding iPad the size of an iPad mini. That device would feature about an eight-inch screen. A foldable iPad has less strict durability standards than a phone form factor. The iPad could be thicker because it is not intended to carry in pockets.
Apple is rumored to work on solutions to lessen the crease in the middle of the display that emerges when folding repeatedly. The company intends the device to be fully flat, allowing users to interact with the screen and freely write on it with attachments such as the Apple Pencil.
Apple's Expanding Foldable Portfolio: From 20-Inch Hybrid to Dual-Screen MacBook/iPad Hybrid
Ross Young also reported on Apple's developing a 20-inch foldable hybrid gadget, slated to be released in 2026 or 2027. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is "exploring a dual-screen, foldable MacBook/iPad hybrid."
According to today's claim from Pu, Apple has "accelerated" its work on foldable devices. The source says Apple's foldable gadgets are becoming more visible as supply chain checks are conducted.
Pu stated that Apple's foldable iPhone would be part of a "new line-up for Apple" aimed at the "ultra-high-end market." Apple is apparently considering two screen sizes for a foldable iPhone: 7.9-inch and 8.3-inch.
The purported 20.3-inch "foldable device" would allegedly begin mass production in late 2025. The foldable iPhone will arrive in late 2026.
