Apple’s rumored high-end smartwatch designed for extreme sports, likely to be named Apple Watch Pro, is expected to introduce significant design changes in the product line. And a new report claims this redesign could also be the reason its future owners will be forced to buy new bands.
Weibo user UnclePan, who has shared some accurate leaks before, now claims (via MacRumors) that the new design Apple Watch Pro will don will be the same reason it will not be compatible with existing Apple Watch bands. If true, this would be the first time in years that Apple customers will not be able to use older bands. Apple has introduced Apple Watch redesigns in the past, but the tech giant has managed to maintain backward compatibility for the smartwatch bands.
The same report claimed that Apple Watch Pro’s flat display and boxy edges, as also mentioned in earlier rumors, are the main reasons it will require new bands. While this might be a little tedious, this direction makes sense considering the high-end smartwatch is expected to mainly feature a rugged design. Apple could justify the lack of backward compatibility with older bands by offering sturdier products to cater to the needs of extreme sports athletes.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, however, chimed in and offered a different possibility regarding the Apple Watch Pro bands. The journalist said on Twitter, “I believe the Apple Watch Pro will support older bands — though maybe they won’t fit as well or look as seamless given the size of the new watch.”

Apple Watch Pro is just one of the smartwatches Apple is expected to announce at its first fall event of the year. Various sources have also claimed that the tech giant will launch the Apple Watch Series 8 and the new Apple Watch SE.
Both the Apple Watch Pro and the Apple Watch Series 8 are expected to feature a new body temperature sensor. It remains to be seen, though, how Apple will implement the technology. Earlier reports suggested that it could be capable of detecting if users potentially have a fever, but it might not be able to provide exact temperature readings.
These devices, along with the iPhone 14 series, are expected to be unveiled at the “Far out” event on Wednesday, Sept. 7.
