‘American Crime Story’ season 2 will follow the events brought about by Hurrican Katrina. Matthew Broderick of ‘The Producers’ fame is set to play FEMA director Michael D. Brown in the second installment. He will be joined by co-star Annette Benning, who will play Louisiana governor Kathleen Blanco.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming season of FX’s true crime anthology television series developed by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski will feature Tony award-winning actor Matthew Broderick in the role of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) director Michael D. Brown.
Brown was tasked at heading the federal disaster response to Hurricane Katrina. Although he earned praise from President George W. Bush for his efforts, much of the country singled him out with criticism.
Broderick is best known for his work on several feature films including 1986’s ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,’ 1996’s ‘The Cable Guy,’ 1999’s ‘Election,’ 2005’s ‘The Producers,’ and 2015’s ‘Trainwreck.’ He is also a popular stage actor, having won the acclaimed Tony awards for his work on 1983’s ‘Torch Song Trilogy’ and 1995’s ‘How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.’
Joining Broderick for season 2 are Sarah Paulson, Courtney B. Vance, and Cuba Gooding Jr. The three starred in the premiere season, ‘People v. O.J. Simpson,’ and are expected to take on brand new roles. The first season won 9 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for Vance, and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for Paulson.
According to Broadway World, multi-awarded actress Annette Benning will also star in the second season as Kathleen Blanco, Louisiana’s Governor during and after the hurricane.
Much like the highly-popular ‘American Horror Story,’ each season is a self-contained miniseries with specific storylines. The upcoming season will take on the story of one of the most devastating natural disasters in U.S. history. It will feature Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.
‘American Crime Story’ season 2 is currently in development and is based on Douglas Brinkley’s book, titled ‘The Great Deluge: Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.’ It is expected to air on FX sometime in 2018.
