“Alita: Battle Angel 2” is being anticipated after the debut movie was highly-praised and became a blockbuster hit in theaters around the world. With the great reception from the viewers, will 20th Century Fox produce a sequel?
“Alita: Battle Angel” is almost at the end of its theatrical run and at this stage, it is still doing well in the box-office. In fact, this movie adaptation of the manga with the same title has reached another milestone by going over the $400 million mark worldwide, Forbes reported.
While this is a big amount already, the American business magazine stated that this is not enough for 20th Century Fox to produce “Alita: Battle Angel 2.” It was explained that a sequel is not likely to happen because the box-office sales are still around US$100-150 million short from the initial estimates. This is how much more is needed for the production company to really earn a profit from the movie.
It was reported that “Alita: Battle Angel” was made with the production budget of US$170 million after tax credits and experts stated that the film must earn at US$350 million to break even. However, with the extra cost for distribution and marketing, the cyberpunk movie should make as much as $500 million in order to get back all the expenses thus even if it was a top-grosser, they said that it has yet to reach a higher level in terms of profits.
Then again, despite Forbes’ opinion stating that 20th Century Fox is not likely to do “Alita: Battle Angel 2,” Cinema Blend listed reasons why the film needs the sequel. First, while the movie did not earn more as expected, it still did great at the tills.
Many people also want “Alita: Battle Angel 2” so this must be considered by the producers. In fact, it already has big fan bases overseas so there is a chance that a sequel will outdo the first movie.
Lastly, the outlet pointed out that the manga-based film ended with a cliffhanger which created the perfect set up for “Alita: Battle Angel 2” to return. The moviegoers would like to see what happens next thus a sequel is definitely called for.
