Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) took center stage at CES in Las Vegas as CEO Lisa Su unveiled a powerful new lineup of PC and artificial intelligence processors, signaling the company’s aggressive push into the fast-growing AI chip market. During the event on Monday evening, Su said AMD is on track to achieve a thousandfold increase in AI performance compared with earlier generations, a bold claim that underscores its ambitions to compete more directly with industry leader NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA).
Among the key announcements was the AMD Ryzen AI 400 series, a new generation of PC processors designed to deliver enhanced on-device AI capabilities for consumers and enterprise users. Su also introduced the MI455 AI processors, which are designed for large-scale data centers that support advanced AI workloads. These chips play a critical role in powering modern AI models and cloud-based applications.
AMD’s growing influence in artificial intelligence was further highlighted by its strategic partnership with OpenAI. The company confirmed that it will supply data center processors to the creator of ChatGPT, marking one of the most significant collaborations in AMD’s history. OpenAI President Greg Brockman joined Su on stage, emphasizing how OpenAI’s future innovations depend heavily on access to cutting-edge AI hardware.
Looking ahead, Su revealed the MI500 processor, which she said delivers up to 1,000 times the performance of an older AMD AI chip. The MI500 is expected to launch in 2027 and represents a long-term bet on the exponential growth of AI computing demands.
The announcements came just hours after NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang previewed the company’s next-generation Vera Rubin AI processor platform at CES, which is expected to debut in 2026. While AMD has benefited from the surge in AI-driven demand, it continues to trail NVIDIA in overall AI chip sales and market dominance.
Still, AMD’s October deal with OpenAI could be transformative. If executed successfully, the partnership is expected to generate hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue over time, positioning AMD as a major force in the future of AI processors and data center technology.
