Yielding Beyond HODL: Inside Metaplanet’s $3.8B Bitcoin Treasury Pivot

Yielding Beyond HODL: Inside Metaplanet’s $3.8B Bitcoin Treasury Pivot

Metaplanet has officially updated its capital-allocation policy to commit 85% to 90% of its total assets to Bitcoin while reserving up to 15% for non-BTC strategic investments. Rather than signaling a retreat from its Bitcoin-first strategy, the new framework is designed to generate recurring income, improve borrowing capacity, and establish a credit profile capable of supporting further long-term accumulation. Under the revised guidelines, Bitcoin-related borrowing will also be capped at roughly 10% of Bitcoin's net asset value.

The flexible 10%–15% allocation bucket will fund income-producing securities, strategic acquisitions for Metaplanet's Bitcoin financial platform, and seed capital for a planned asset-management venture. Central to this plan is the "Net Interest Income Strategy," which aims to capture positive yield spreads between asset returns and corporate financing costs using preferred shares, borrowing, and specialized "BitBonds". To demonstrate active liquidity and debt service capability to credit rating agencies, the company executed a tactical trade in Q3—selling 10,000 BTC for $789.2 million before buying back 11,000 BTC for $948.7 million, expanding its reserve by 1,000 BTC.

As of late September, Metaplanet held 44,000 BTC valued at approximately $3.8 billion, against an aggregate cost basis of $4.33 billion (~$98,454 per BTC). This policy evolution adds an operational yield and credit layer to a treasury that previously depended entirely on Bitcoin price appreciation. For investors, the tradeoff balances continued high exposure to Bitcoin with up to 15% of the balance sheet deployed into cash-flowing ventures—enhancing financial durability and funding flexibility while introducing external execution risk.
