Three Vietnamese airlines have signed major aircraft purchase agreements with U.S. aerospace giant Boeing, totaling 90 planes, as Vietnam and the United States continue negotiations on a new bilateral trade deal. The announcements were made during a visit to the United States by To Lam, head of Vietnam’s Communist Party, who attended the inaugural Board of Peace meeting—an initiative launched by U.S. President Donald Trump aimed at addressing global conflicts.
Vietnam Airlines confirmed an $8.1 billion agreement to acquire 50 Boeing 737-8 narrow-body jets. According to the national carrier, deliveries are scheduled between 2030 and 2032. This fleet expansion plan is expected to increase Vietnam Airlines’ total aircraft count to around 151 by 2030, strengthening its regional and international operations. The airline also revealed it is in discussions with Boeing to potentially purchase an additional 30 wide-body aircraft valued at up to $12 billion, signaling long-term growth ambitions.
Newly established Sun PhuQuoc Airways also finalized a significant deal with Boeing, agreeing to purchase 40 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft in a contract valued at $22.5 billion. The wide-body jets are expected to support the airline’s international expansion strategy and position it as a key player in Vietnam’s rapidly growing aviation market.
Meanwhile, low-cost carrier Vietjet secured a $965 million financing agreement with Griffin Global Asset Management to support its acquisition of six Boeing 737-8 aircraft. The deal highlights Vietjet’s continued investment in fleet modernization and fuel-efficient aircraft.
The aircraft purchases come as Vietnam signals a willingness to increase imports of American goods. Earlier this month, the White House announced it would maintain 20% tariffs on most Vietnamese exports while lifting duties on select products, underscoring ongoing U.S.–Vietnam trade negotiations.
