U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar held a phone call on Monday to address escalating trade tensions, focusing on U.S. tariffs on Indian imports and efforts toward a fair and balanced trade relationship. The conversation comes as both nations work toward concluding a long-awaited bilateral trade agreement.
Jaishankar confirmed the dialogue on social media, emphasizing the urgency of finalizing the trade deal. "Agreed on the importance of the early conclusion of the Bilateral Trade Agreement. Look forward to remaining in touch," he posted.
This diplomatic exchange follows President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of a sweeping 10% baseline tariff on all U.S. imports, along with higher duties targeting several key trade partners, including India. The move has sparked uncertainty in global markets and raised concerns among U.S. allies.
Despite the imposition of a 26% tariff on Indian goods, New Delhi reportedly does not plan to retaliate. An Indian government official stated that the country aims to resolve the dispute through continued negotiations, signaling a desire to de-escalate tensions and maintain positive trade relations.
The State Department highlighted the ongoing efforts to improve trade ties, stating, “They also discussed U.S. reciprocal tariffs on India and how to make progress toward a fair and balanced trade relationship.”
As one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, India remains a crucial partner for the U.S. in both trade and geopolitical strategy. With both sides emphasizing cooperation, the successful conclusion of a bilateral trade agreement could help stabilize relations and boost investor confidence amid uncertain global economic conditions.
