US Election Series: latest scorecard

Former US Secretary of State and wife of former president Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton is clearly leading the race, whereas things have heated up on the republican side. Originally 16 candidates, joined the republican race but only four are remaining now. Latest to drop out was retired neuo-surgeon Ben Carson.

  • Donald Trump is still leading in the republican race with 384 delegates, followed by Ted Cruz with 300 delegates, Marco Rubio with 151 delegates and John Kasich with just 37 delegates. Donald Trump campaign lost some of the earlier momentum in the face of intense attack from Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, along with other prominent republican such as Mitt Romney, who fought against President Barrack Obama in his re-election bid in 2012 and John McCain, who fought against Obama in 2008 election. Republican nominee needs1237 delegates to win party nominations.
  • On the democratic side, Mrs. Clinton is clearly front runner with, 1130 delegates, whereas Bernie Sanders is far behind with just 499 candidates. This big gap is largely due to Super Delegates, who are free to choose whomever they like. So far 455 super delegates have sided with Mrs. Clinton, compared to 22 with Mr. Sanders. Democratic nominee needs 2383 delegates to win nominations.

Today is another day of election. On the republican side, Hawaii, Idaho, Michigan and Mississippi going to vote with 150 delegates on offer. On the democrat side, Michigan and Mississippi are voting with 166 delegates on offer.
