James Roscoe, Britain’s second most senior diplomat in Washington, has stepped down from his position at the British Embassy in the United States, according to a statement released by the UK Foreign Office on Wednesday.
The Foreign Office confirmed Roscoe’s departure but did not explain the reason behind his exit. Officials also declined to provide additional details regarding the sudden change in diplomatic leadership. Roscoe himself was not immediately available for comment.
Roscoe had served as the deputy head of mission at the British Embassy in Washington since July 2022. During his tenure, he became a key figure in managing UK-US diplomatic relations, particularly during a turbulent period for Britain’s representation in Washington.
Between September 2025 and February 2026, Roscoe acted as Chargé d’Affaires to the United States after former British ambassador Peter Mandelson was removed from his post. Mandelson’s dismissal followed controversy surrounding his reported connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, which drew public and political scrutiny.
The diplomatic transition continued later in 2025 when Christian Turner was appointed as the new British ambassador to the United States in December. Turner officially assumed the role in February 2026, restoring permanent leadership at the embassy after several months of uncertainty.
Roscoe’s departure comes at a sensitive time for UK-US relations, with both countries continuing to coordinate closely on global security, trade, and foreign policy issues. Analysts say changes within the British diplomatic team in Washington could attract attention due to the strategic importance of the alliance between the two nations.
The UK Foreign Office has not yet announced who will replace Roscoe as deputy head of mission at the embassy in Washington.
