TheRecover.com, Signs of Heroin Addiction and What to Look For

SAN DIEGO, April 09, 2018 -- If a loved one is addicted to heroin, then discovering the truth can sometimes be more difficult than you would think. Addicts aren’t typically proud of their drug use and do everything they can to hide their addiction and conceal the evidence of their substance abuse. The addict will typically deny that they are using even when caught red-handed, often creating alternative explanations for their behavior that may even be convincing.

What To Look For:

Residue

Because heroin can come in more than one form, which tends to vary by region, the residue you find may come in a few different forms, and have a range of textures and colors. Light brown or white heroin is generally either in powder form, or a chalky, crumbling solid. Black tar heroin, however, is a sticky, dark brown substance, and looks like a tootsie roll or roofing tar. Although heroin addicts rarely leave behind large amounts of their drug, you may find sticky black residue left behind where they were using, specifically in bathrooms and bedrooms. You may also find small speckles of powder, which can look like flower or sand.

Paraphernalia

Because heroin is either smoked, snorted, or taken intravenously, the residue left behind can vary depending on the route of administration. If your loved one is smoking heroin, be prepared to find small glass pipes about a finger length and width, or crumbled pieces of aluminum foil. The aluminum may have dark stains on the surface, which is the residue leftover after the heroin has been smoked. Addicts smoking or injecting heroin usually have lighters which sometimes have an adjustable flame. Both smoking and snorting heroin requires some type of tube, and heroin addicts commonly use hollowed out pens, straws, or rolled up pieces of paper of about the same length. Addicts that shoot heroin often leave behind burnt spoons, which is where they mix the heroin with water before they inject it. They also tightly wrap something around their arm to make their veins rise to the surface of their skin. This can be either a rubber band, a plastic tube, or a belt. Regardless of the route of administration, heroin generally comes in small plastic bags, colorful balloons, or cellophane, so finding any of these means that someone is involved in the Seattle heroin epidemic.
