‘The Winds of Winter’: George RR Martin must release book by August or risks being banished to NZ’s White Island

“The Winds of Winter” is long-delayed and it should have been published many years ago. It has been eight years going on nine since the fifth book in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” was released and unfortunately, the sixth book has yet to arrive.

Fans have been waiting all these years and it cannot be denied that many have already given up while others are disappointed that Martin has not given his full attention on finishing the book earlier. Some blamed the author’s other works such as the “Game of Thrones” series on HBO and his long line of other writing projects.

Because many fans are already frustrated and GRRM knows about this, he said in early 2019 that he will not be giving any release date anymore as he always missed them anyway which only frustrates fans even more. However, a few months later, Martin proved that he can’t keep his mouth shut and made a new promise with regards to “The Winds of Winter” release date.

The promise

In May 2019, Martin wrote on his blog and announced that he will be publishing “TWOW” in either July or August 2020. Although he did not directly mention the months, they are the likely dates because he mentioned an event that he is attending on the day that he will release the book.

This time, Martin seems confident that he will make it to the deadline as he also made a dare and it placed him at risk of being banished on a remote island in New Zealand. On his blog entry titled “Thanks, New Zealand,” the 71-year-old multi-awarded author said that “The Winds of Winter” will be out by the summer of this year.

“As for finishing my book, I fear that New Zealand would distract me entirely too much so it’s best to leave me here in Westeros for once,” he wrote. “But I tell you this - if I don’t have ‘THE WINDS OF WINTER’ in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for Worldcon, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I’m done.”

The publishing date

It should be noted that the Worldcon in New Zealand is happening from July 29 to Aug. 2 so these are the possible release date of “The Winds of Winter.” At any rate, Martin must publish the book on these months as the fans are already seething with anger, as per the Express. Plus, he does not want to risk his freedom because he could really end up on NZ’s White Island all alone.
