‘The Crown’ Season 2 Updates: Netflix Series Expected to Return 2017; Creator Peter Morgan Addresses Rumors Calling Show Most Expensive Ever Made

‘The Crown’ season 2 is expected to return to Netflix sometime in 2017. Meanwhile, creator Peter Morgan insisted that his series is not the most expensive show ever made despite the rumors.

According to Netflix Life’s Fansided, the second season of American-British television drama series written and created by Peter Morgan is expected to return to Netflix sometime in the late fall or early winter of 2017.

Season 1 was released last November 4, 2016 and received praise for direction, plot, cinematography, as well as cast performances. The series follows the life of Queen Elizabeth II’s early reign in the United Kingdom. The story traces back from her 1947 wedding at Westminster Abbey with Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, until the present day.

Claire Foy portrays Queen Elizabeth II in her early years. It also stars Matt Smith as Prince Philip, Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret, Eileen Atkins as Queen Mary, Victoria Hamilton as Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Ben Miles as Peter Townsend, Jeremy Northam as Anthony Eden, Greg Wise as Lord Louis Mountbatten, Jared Harris as King George VI, and John Lithgow as Winston Churchill.

Smith praised Morgan’s work in a previous interview saying, “The script is very good. He’s clever that writer, Peter Morgan. Even if you think you know the story... you don’t.”

According to The Daily Mail, the Netflix series was deemed the most expensive television series ever produced with a reported budget of $100 million. However, Morgan denied the massive cost when asked about the budget.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 53-year old British film writer and playwright insisted that ‘The Crown’ is not the most expensive series. He said, “Not at all. It's not. There's sums of money that people talk about. I don't know. It was $100 million for two seasons.”

Morgan also admitted that he wasn’t ready to tackle a third season just yet. He said, “I've got to be honest with you. I cannot think beyond season two and I'm not going to think beyond season two.”

He continued, “Of course by virtue of the fact that we continue to have Prime Ministers and the Queen has continued to stay alive and on the throne, there is a possibility of further material. As any showrunner will tell you, it is crushing work… Pretty much nothing else in your life exists but this. I'm not thinking beyond this.”

Morgan added, “The agreement I made with Netflix is that I would wait and see how the show was received before ever considering continuing… I haven't thought for one second about future seasons because I'm almost living in denial of the possibility of this continuing.”

‘The Crown’ has been renewed for season 2. The series is expected to return to Netflix by 2017.
