‘The Crown Season 2 Spoilers: Focus Shifts to Young Charles, Philips Backstory; Margaret Finds Love in Photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones

‘The Crown’ season 2 is set to shift its focus to Philip’s backstory as well as introduce young Charles, the heir to the throne. Meanwhile, Margaret is set to find love in photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones.

During an interview with People, series creator and writer Peter Morgan revealed that the incoming season will shift its focus from Queen Elizabeth II’s early reign in England to her husband Prince Philip’s backstory. Season 2 will also introduce young Charles, Elizabeth and Philip’s eldest son and heir to the throne.

Morgan said, “We start to focus on Charles as a young boy and his education, and on Philip and his back story.”

Executive producer Suzanne Mackie added, “We glance backward to Philip’s childhood and his upbringing, and how that might have impacted him as a man, a father and as Prince Consort — which is fascinating.”

The second season is currently in production. It was reported that cast and crew recently filmed in South Africa for scenes depicting Prince Philip’s Commonwealth tour, one that lasted for several months.

Morgan teased, “It’s goodbye to a different, Edwardian, post-Imperial world… We get a classlessness and a modernity beginning to creep in. It is going to be terrific.”

Matt Smith is set to return as Queen Elizabeth II’s husband Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. Claire Foy returns as Queen Elizabeth II, Vanessa Kirby as Elizabeth’s younger sister Princess Margaret, Eileen Atkins as Elizabeth’s grandmother Queen Mary, Alex Jennings as Duke Edward, Ben Miles as Peter Townsend, Jared Harris as King George VI, and Victoria Hamilton as Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

According to Yahoo! TV, Morgan revealed during a backstage press tour at the recent Golden Globes awards that the series will pick up after the events of season 1 and tackle issues such as the Suez Crisis and cultural changes brought on by the 1960s. He said, “We’re filming the second season right now, and that will take us through to 1964… As Britain goes into the ’60s, the world changes.”

The period drama won the Golden Globes for Best Drama Series as well as Best Actress in a Drama Series for Foy.

Meanwhile, Express reported that love will return in Princess Margaret’s life as she will go into a relationship with photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones. The two will have two children together.

‘The Crown’ season 2 is expected to be released by Netflix sometime in 2017.
