It was recently announced that “The Big Bang Theory” Season 12 will be the last time that fans of the show will see the gang get together and get tangled up in all kinds of funny hijinks. The reason for the show ending reportedly has to do with Jim Parsons’s decision to walk away from his role as Dr. Sheldon Cooper. With his departure, “TBBT” simply could not continue.

As one of the most popular sitcoms in the U.S., it might seem odd that Jim Parsons would want to stop playing his iconic role. However, this seems to be exactly what is happening, Entertainment Weekly reports. As such, “The Big Bang Theory” Season 12 will be the show’s last.

The decision was also apparently made while CBS was in the middle of negotiating with the show’s cast to appear in two more seasons. If they had agreed, each of the program’s main stars would have made $50 million over that period. It seems this was not enough to make Jim Parsons stay, though, who has only agreed to play Sheldon until “The Big Bang Theory” Season 12.

In a message that the actor posted on Instagram, Jim Parsons expressed his gratitude to the fans and for the opportunity to be part of the “TBBT” family. He also thanked his fellow cast members, whom the actor has spent the better part of 11 years with, which will end in “The Big Bang Theory” Season 12.

“I will miss all of you and all of this more than I can say and more than I can know at this time,” the post reads.

“The Big Bang Theory” Season 12 will premiere on Sept. 24 but it will move to Sept. 27 for its regular timeslot. The season will open with Kathy Bates returning as the mother of Sheldon’s new bride, Amy (Mayim Bialik). Neil deGrasse Tyson will also be making an appearance.
