Stolen bitcoin forum data for sale on dark web

Following recent reports that revealed major security breach at bitcoin discussion forum BitcoinTalk.org in 2015, a hacker is now selling the site’s database on dark net.

Hack Read reported that a hacker going by the name ‘DoubleFlag’ has posted the data stolen from BitcoinTalk.org for sale. According to the report, it is the same hacker who sold 68 million emails and hashed passwords of Dropbox users on a dark web marketplace.

Data breach monitoring service LeakedSource stated last week that users of BitcoinTalk.org were under attack in May 2015. The data was leaked a few days ago and was only accessible to data breaches notification sites like Hacked-DB and LeakedSource.

The database file has 514,408 accounts, with 469,540 passwords encrypted with the SHA-256 algorithm and 44,868 passwords encrypted with SMF password encryption. Although the passwords are encrypted, Hack Read said that it wouldn’t take much time to decrypt them.

The stolen data is being offered for 1 BTC (approximately $600 according to current exchange rate). Sample data of over 600 accounts was on display. The data contains information on usernames, emails, passwords, IP addresses, and phone numbers.

Earlier in 2013, a group of hackers going by “The Hole Seekers” hacked BitcoinTalk.org and were selling 150,000 user emails and hashed passwords online.
