It appears that roster changes follow LeBron James even outside the NBA. It was reported that “Space Jam 2” welcomed a new director shortly after the Los Angeles Lakers star confirmed its production started this summer. Fans might now be wondering whether this major tweak would cause a delay in the initial set premiere date.
‘Space Jam 2’ release date, production: What’s the latest and what to expect
James will star in the sequel film and is also credited as one of the producers along with Ryan Coogler, who is best known for directing “Creed” and “Black Panther.” The confirmation that “Space Jam 2” filming has started in late June also came from James along with other interesting behind-the-scenes updates in the following weeks.
However, it was reported in mid-July that Terence Nance was vacating his director’s seat and will be replaced by Malcolm D. Lee. Some of his more recent directorial jobs include “Girls Trip” and “Night School.” Per Deadline’s report, the decision to let go of Nance was “amicable” and purportedly resulted from creative differences with the producers.
Based on the social media updates from James since Lee’s addition was reported, the filming apparently continued. And if no major delays are anticipated, “Space Jam 2” is most likely still going to premiere on July 16, 2021.

‘Space Jam 2’ spoilers, cast: Who are James’ opponents and teammates?
Since the movie is not slated to premiere in about two more years, plot details remain tightly under wraps. However, fans can still bet on seeing James team up with cartoon characters from the Looney Tunes. Meanwhile, a 2016 Nike ad appeared to have teased the making of “Space Jam 2” and confirmed that the team of alien villains, Monstars, will return.

James has also set up a star-studded team for the second version of the Tune Squad. On-set videos and photos previously made it online confirming that other NBA stars such as Anthony Davis, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, and Damian Lillard will star in the sequel. But other NBA superstars such as Giannis Antetokounmpo and Steph Curry have reportedly turned down offers to join the movie.
WNBA stars Diana Taurasi, Nneka Ogwumike, and Chiney Ogwumike are also reported to join “Space Jam 2.” Actress Sonequa Martin-Green (“The Walking Dead” and “Star Trek: Discovery”) will portray James’s wife, Savannah James. In July, Don Cheadle was confirmed to be the latest cast addition, but the role he is playing is still unknown.
