Fans want “Sherlock” season 5 back and they have been waiting for a long time now. There is no update about it so its viewers are wondering if it will ever return. They also fear that it was already canceled by BBC but the network has not announced anything like this so far.

So, will it still return? It is true that is long delayed. It has been more than a year since season 4 ended and the sad thing is that up to now, its producers still cannot say when they will be back to work. However, its showrunner and some cast members give fans some hope by saying that they still have a high chance of returning but they just do not know when exactly that would be.

“Sherlock” season 5’s co-creator, Steven Moffat, previously said that he and the production team are not closing their doors to the possibility of the detective drama’s comeback. He explained that he and some of the cast members are just busy with other projects and this is why they cannot say when they will begin filming for the next installment.

Moffat further shared that he and show’s co-creator Mark Gatiss are working on another drama for BBC and mentioned “Dracula” as their current project. Despite this, he pointed out that they have not ruled out “Sherlock” season 5.

The drama’s lead star, Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes), also said that he is eager to do “Sherlock” season 5" again. In his previous interview with Radio Times, he said, "Nobody has ever closed the door on Sherlock — we just say the same thing all the time and it gets quoted different ways.”

He added, “We haven't got an immediate plan, but I would remain surprised, given the collective enthusiasm we have for it, if we didn't do it again."

In any case, perhaps there was another reason for “Sherlock” season 5’s delay. It was said there is a rift between the series’ lead actors, Martin Freeman (Doctor John Watson) and Cumberbatch.

It was reported that the former’s comment about the show being not fun to do anymore upset the latter and went on to criticize his co-star. It was blown out of proportion so it seems that this misunderstanding created a tension between the two so it is difficult to put them together now.

Finally, Mark Gratis revealed during an interview at the “Christopher Robin” movie premiere in August that it is not possible to do it now or any time soon so fans may have to wait a few years more for the new installment. “Sherlock” season 5 has no airdate yet since production has not even started yet.
