‘Sherlock’ season 4 will introduced a brand new major villain to be portrayed by Golden Globe-nominee Toby Jones. Filming is also rumored to move to Morocco after shooting in Cardiff wraps.
According to The Independent, Jones is set to join Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in the incoming new season for ‘Sherlock’. Co-creator Stephen Moffat teased, "Delighted to have Toby Jones on board, bringing to life one of Doyle's finest villains". Fellow co-creator Mark Gatiss added, "We're thrilled to welcome one of our finest actors to the Sherlock family. I know Toby will embrace the part with true relish."
No final confirmation regarding Jones has been made as of the present. The tease fueled speculations of Jones’ classic villain from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original detective stories.
According to Digital Spy, Jones could be playing one of a number of iconic Doyle villains. One such villain would be Col. Sebastian Moran, an ex-army colonel turned mercenary best known as Prof. James Moriarty’s right-hand man. The character has also been dubbed “the second most dangerous man in London”.
Another potential villain would be Brigham Young, the real-life leader of the early Mormon church who featured in Doyle’s ‘A Study in Scarlet’ as an antagonistic character. He was chronologically Doyle’s first ever villain.
Toby could also be playing John Clay, the antagonistic smuggler from Doyle’s ‘The Red-Headed League’. In the original story, Clay operated under the alias of Spaulding for pawnbroker Jabez Wilson.
Meanwhile, production for season 4 is speculated to be moving to Marrakech, Morocco after filming in Cardiff, Wales. According to Den of Geek, the exotic locale will be the setting of several scenes for the incoming new season but this remains to be confirmed. Principal photography began in Cardiff in April 2016.
‘Sherlock’ season 4 may return to the small screen sometime in January 2017 although no official release date has been announced as of the present. The British-American crime-drama television series, created by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffatt, is based on the classic Sherlock Holmes stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and is set in modern-day London.
