A devastating Russian missile attack struck the town of Merefa in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region on Monday morning, leaving at least seven people dead and more than 30 injured, according to Ukrainian officials. Among the wounded was a 2-year-old child, highlighting the severe human toll of the ongoing conflict.
Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov reported that the strike occurred around 9:35 a.m. local time and caused significant destruction in the town center. At least 10 residential homes, an administrative building, four shops, a car repair facility, and a food establishment were damaged. Authorities described the explosion as extremely powerful, hitting near a central roadway and scattering debris across the area. Cleanup operations are expected to take several days.
Initial reports confirmed that five victims—two men and three women—were killed instantly, while two others later died in hospital due to their injuries. Prosecutors indicated that Russian forces likely used an Iskander-type ballistic missile in the attack. Emergency services reported a total of at least 36 people injured.
Eyewitness accounts revealed the emotional impact of the tragedy. One resident, Ihor Kolodiazhnyi, lost his wife in the strike. He described hearing a loud explosion shortly after she left home and later discovering her body near her usual route to work. His account reflects the sudden and tragic loss experienced by civilians in the region.
Images released by emergency responders showed widespread damage, including a large crater in the road, burned vehicles, and buildings with shattered windows and damaged roofs. Rescue teams were seen assisting injured civilians, some covered in blood.
Russia has not issued an immediate response to the incident. While Moscow has consistently denied targeting civilians, the war, which began with the full-scale invasion in February 2022, has resulted in thousands of civilian casualties. Ukrainian officials have also reported increased Russian attacks on critical infrastructure, including ports, in recent months.
