Russian forces launched a new wave of attacks across Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region on Tuesday, killing at least six people and injuring several others shortly after a temporary U.S.-mediated ceasefire expired. Ukrainian officials reported that Russia deployed more than 200 drones overnight, signaling a sharp escalation in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
One of the deadliest strikes hit Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. A drone attack on a residential apartment building killed two people and injured four others, including a nine-month-old child who suffered severe injuries. Ukrainian authorities described the strike as another attack targeting civilians and residential infrastructure.
Additional bomb strikes northeast of Kryvyi Rih reportedly killed four more people and left several injured, according to regional officials. Ukrainian military sources said intense fighting continued along the eastern frontline, especially near the strategic towns of Kostiantynivka and Pokrovsk, where Russian troops launched dozens of combat operations over the past 24 hours.
The three-day ceasefire had been linked to commemorations marking the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany during World War II. While both Russia and Ukraine accused each other of violating the truce, large-scale aerial attacks had temporarily decreased during the pause in fighting. U.S. President Donald Trump had expressed hope that the ceasefire would continue, but renewed hostilities quickly ended those expectations.
President Zelenskiy confirmed that Ukrainian forces also carried out strikes on gas facilities in Russia’s Orenburg region, located more than 1,500 kilometers from Ukraine’s border. Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to work with European allies and NATO representatives to strengthen ballistic missile defense systems amid increasing drone and missile threats.
Russian drone attacks also caused damage in Kyiv, Cherkasy, Zhytomyr, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv, Kherson, and Dnipro regions, with energy infrastructure and civilian buildings among the reported targets.
