Ukraine’s capital Kyiv faced a large-scale Russian drone and missile attack early Thursday, according to Ukrainian officials. The overnight assault triggered explosions across several districts of the city, causing damage to residential buildings and increasing fears of further escalation in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, said debris from intercepted drones struck multiple locations throughout the capital. Several residential properties were reportedly hit, while emergency crews were deployed to affected areas to contain fires and assess the destruction. Videos circulating on unofficial Telegram channels appeared to show apartment buildings engulfed in flames following the attack.
Authorities did not immediately confirm any casualties, though rescue operations and damage inspections were ongoing as the situation developed. Residents across Kyiv were urged to remain in shelters during the aerial assault as air defense systems worked to intercept incoming threats.
Ukraine’s air force stated that Russian missiles also targeted several other regions across the country. Areas affected included Kharkiv, Sumy, and Chernihiv in northern Ukraine, as well as the central Poltava region. The widespread strikes highlighted the continuing intensity of Russia’s military campaign against Ukraine and raised concerns over civilian safety and infrastructure damage.
The latest attack comes amid continued tensions between Moscow and Kyiv, with Russia increasing the use of drones and long-range missiles in recent months. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly called for stronger international support and enhanced air defense systems to protect major cities from repeated aerial assaults.
As the conflict continues, Kyiv remains one of the primary targets of Russian attacks, with civilians facing ongoing threats from missile strikes and drone warfare. Emergency services remain on high alert while authorities continue monitoring the security situation across Ukraine.
