Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is recovering in a Florida hospital after being diagnosed with pneumonia, according to his spokesperson. The 81-year-old political figure remains in critical but stable condition, though recent updates indicate some improvement in his health.
Giuliani, widely known for his leadership during the September 11, 2001 attacks, reportedly developed restrictive airway disease as a long-term effect of his exposure at Ground Zero. This underlying respiratory condition made him more vulnerable when the illness progressed, leading to complications that required urgent medical care. His spokesperson, Ted Goodman, explained that the infection rapidly impacted Giuliani’s ability to breathe, necessitating mechanical ventilation to stabilize his oxygen levels. However, he is now breathing independently, signaling a positive step in his recovery.
The former mayor was admitted to Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he currently resides. Sources familiar with the situation confirmed that he was hospitalized on Sunday and has since been under close medical supervision.
Rudy Giuliani rose to global prominence for his role in guiding New York City through one of its darkest periods following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, earning the nickname “America’s Mayor.” However, his later involvement in efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 U.S. presidential election sparked controversy and legal challenges. These included criminal charges in two states and a high-profile defamation lawsuit filed by election workers, all of which Giuliani has denied.
New York City’s current mayor, Zohran Mamdani, expressed concern and extended well wishes for Giuliani’s recovery. He acknowledged Giuliani’s long-standing presence in the city’s political landscape and noted that many New Yorkers are closely following updates on his condition.
As Giuliani continues his recovery, public attention remains focused on his health status and legacy, reflecting both his historic leadership and his more recent political controversies.
