RuPaul, JJ Abrams To Co-Produce New Comedy Drama Series About “Drag Race” Star’s Early Days

Want to see RuPaul in her early days? The “Drag Race” creator and host is currently developing a half-hour drama comedy series about her rise from “club kid to drag queen, gay icon, and global star.”

According to Deadline, the untitled series will see her onboard as executive producer, along with J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot partner Ben Stephenson, as well as World of Wonder’s Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato, and Tom Campbell. “Power” executive producer Gary Lennon will write for the series, which will be set during the Reagan era 1980s in New York.

Vanity Fair wrote about RuPaul’s humble beginnings:

“Though RuPaul was born and raised in San Diego, he moved across the country to Atlanta before dropping out of high school and booking it to New York City, where his drag career took off. Before he established his polished glamazon drag look, he was in a punk band, experimenting with “gender fuck” and “black hooker” aesthetics. “I had smeared lipstick and combat boots and torn wedding dresses, like ‘F-you!’ That’s gender fuck,” he recalled in an interview with i-D in 2015.”

RuPaul rose to fame following her prominent presence in the 80’s in New York’s club and drag scene. In the ‘90s, people saw RuPaul as an established mainstream artist, garnering success at a level rare for an openly gay performer in music and in television.

The New York Times said although a spokesman for Warner Bros. Television, which is affiliated with Bad Robot, declined to comment on Tuesday, Entertainment Weekly has independently confirmed the project.
