‘Overlord’ season 4: Is it the final installment for the anime series?

Predicting what happens next in “Overlord” season 4 is quite an easy task, thanks to the availability of light novel volumes that have yet to be covered in the anime series. However, estimating the show’s future beyond the fourth season is a different story.

Will ‘Overlord’ season 4 cover the end of the series?

Discussing this aspect of the anime series requires looking through the light novel’s publication as well. While the story is told through different approaches in the anime and the light novels, the TV adaptation has been fairly consistent with the original series.

Fans may have also noticed that there has been a consistent number of light novel volumes adapted in the earlier seasons. There were three volumes in each season suggesting that “Overlord” season 4 would feature events from volumes 10 to 12. This is possibly where some fans are getting a little worried because there are only two more volumes left after that, with volume 14 slated to be released on March 12, 2020.

It should be noted that there are no indications to end the series in volume 14. Series creator Kugane Maruyama reportedly suggested last August that the story could last until volume 17. However, Monsters & Critics recalled that Maruyama had to change ideas about the overall length of the light novel series. He once floated the possibility of writing as much as 20 volumes but then scaled it down to 18 in 2016.

Whichever of these declarations becomes a reality; anime fans should not worry about “Overlord” season 4 being the last installment. Even if Maruyama decides to maintain his latest statement and end the story in volume 17, the anime series could even exceed five seasons.

Overlord’ season 4 production, release date: What’s the latest update

Technically, there is no official update on “Overlord” season 4 as the next installment has not even been confirmed by Madhouse or other producers yet. The only ounce of hope for a series renewal was the short message in season 3 finale that said, “And the story goes on.”

Some fans thought it implied that “Overlord” season 4 would be released in the future. However, others suggested that it could be just encouraging viewers also to follow the story in the light novel.
