‘Orange Is The New Black’ season 4 proves its popularity through ratings that revealed a 6.5 million viewership upon the premiere of its first episode on June 17. The numbers were provided through Nielsen ratings.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, ratings standard-bearer Nielsen released the numbers for the fourth season’s premiere. Its first findings on viewership of television shows on streaming services for ‘Orange Is The New Black’ revealed that 6.7 million viewers tuned in to watch the first episode of season 4 following its June 17 launch. Although the number is yet to be confirmed by Netflix, it was first released during a presentation at Nielsen's Consumer 360 conference in Las Vegas.
The show’s rating puts it on the same level as other most-watched television series including HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’, which topped at 10.4 million. Nielsen’s new streaming measurements allow for the tracking of viewership.
According to the A.V. Club, 5.9 million viewers stayed for season 4’s second episode. This proves that the long-running television show about the female inmates at Litchfield penitentiary still continues to thrive in its popularity.
The data from Nielsen is only shared privately to studios after media companies sought information about ratings for television shows on subscription services such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon. These streaming services usually don’t release numbers. Since the streaming data isn’t circulated publicly, this may not give studios enough comparison on how their shows are competing with others.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Nielsen’s viewership measurement includes the total audience per episode, the breakdown by demographics, and indications of viewers likely to follow the show on traditional television format.
‘Orange Is the New Black’ is a comedy-drama series created by Jenji Kohan and based on Piper Kerman’s memoir of the same name. It is produced by Tilted Productions in association with Lionsgate Television and is streamed on Netflix. The series was renewed for a fifth, sixth, and seventh season on February 2016.
