U.S. stock futures climbed Thursday, led by a sharp rise in Nasdaq futures after strong earnings and guidance from Micron Technology reinforced investor confidence in artificial intelligence-driven chip demand.
Wall Street was positioned for a positive start to the fourth quarter following a difficult September marked by surging Treasury yields and persistent U.S.-Iran tensions. By 01:38 ET (05:38 GMT), S&P 500 futures gained 0.64% to 7,764.50, Nasdaq 100 futures jumped 1.2% to 31,063.0, and Dow Jones futures advanced 0.4% to 51,480.0.
Micron Technology reported fiscal fourth-quarter adjusted earnings of $33.42 per share, topping expectations of $31.16. The memory chipmaker also projected current-quarter adjusted earnings of $38.15 per share, plus or minus $1.00, compared with Wall Street estimates of $36.02.
Micron shares rose as much as 1% in volatile after-hours trading before briefly giving up their gains. Investors weighed the upbeat results against expectations for slightly weaker gross margins and higher operating expenses in fiscal 2027. Management also offered limited details on shareholder returns, although the company said it plans to increase returns in December.
Despite those concerns, Micron’s earnings strengthened expectations that AI-related demand will continue supporting semiconductor sales and technology valuations. Chip stocks across Japan, South Korea and Taiwan also advanced Thursday.
The rebound in U.S. stock futures followed a mixed Wednesday session. The S&P 500 declined 0.25%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.86%. The Nasdaq Composite gained about 0.2%. For September, the S&P 500 lost 0.4% and the Dow fell 4.3%, while the Nasdaq advanced 1.9%.
Treasury yields remain a major concern for markets. Softer-than-expected August PCE inflation data failed to halt the bond selloff, with the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield reaching a fresh 19-year high Wednesday and remaining above 5.2%.
Investors are now turning their attention to Friday’s September U.S. nonfarm payrolls report for fresh clues on the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook.
