“Narcos: Mexico” is now officially streaming on Netflix. While it is a completely fresh take on the history of some of the biggest drug traffickers, some might be asking whether there will ever be a “Narcos” season 4.
Some fans might be referring to “Narcos: Mexico” as “Narcos” season 4. While it was released after the third season of the original series, it is billed as a standalone franchise. In fact, if fans would look at it on Netflix, they can observe that “Narcos: Mexico” is uploaded on its own page, separate from the three-part series set in Colombia.
Last month, TVLine has also confirmed that Netflix is officially promoting “Narcos: Mexico” as the first season of a new, spin-off series. In much earlier interviews, people attached to the show’s production also referred to the latest installment as a series “reset” which means it is, technically, not “Narcos” season 4.
Now, some fans might be asking whether or not a “Narcos” season 4 will be released. The original series focused on the rise of Pablo Escobar and the empire of drug lords he helped establish in Colombia with a vast market reach across the Americas. Escobar’s life was the main storyline but only up to the second season where his death was covered. Then, season 3 focused on a group of baddies involved in the Cali cartel.
In the season 3 finale, however, cartel leader Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela (Damián Alcázar) announced that he is breaking up the Cali cartel and encouraged his colleagues to venture on legal businesses. This apparently hinted that a new group will take the center stage once “Narcos” season 4 is released. But the series reset was later reported mainly because the franchise moves on to focus on the Guadalajara cartel and also relocating the filming and production to locations in Mexico.
Netflix is yet to directly announce the end of the original series, possibly because the “Narcos” franchise per se is not ending yet. But the release of “Narcos: Mexico” pretty much tells fans that the release of “Narcos” season 4 is, technically, unlikely happening in the future.
