Marine Le Pen likely to win French election round one but not two

National Front leader Marine Le Pen, who is dreaded by the member countries of the European Union is likely to win the first round of the French election that will be held on 24th of April this year, according to a poll by Kantar Sofres.

Whenever a Presidential candidate fails to garner a majority, the two biggest winner moves to the second round and then the winner becomes the President. In the first round, she is expected to win 25 percent of the votes, followed by 22 percent for the conservative former Prime Minister Francois Fillon, and 21 percent for Emmanuel Marcon, an independent.

Ms. Le pen has vowed to halt the immigration and go for a referendum on the European Union membership as well as the Euro membership. Her win could mean France’s exit from the monetary union. The last thing the political elites in Europe want is for her to win. German finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble said that he hopes that Ms. Le Pen never becomes President.

However, she is likely to lose in the second round. The poll suggests that in the second round, Fillon would best her by gathering 60 percent votes, while Marcon would do even better with 65 percent votes.
