Malta Stock Exchange forms blockchain committee

Malta Stock Exchange announced that it has created a blockchain committee that will work on assisting the formulation of a strategy geared towards addressing this emerging distributed ledger technology.

The committee will comprise of members of the Exchange’s Board including, its Chairman and Chief Executive and other experts in the field. The program aims in helping the entrepreneurs, grow their companies. Malta Stock Exchange Director, Dr. Abdalla Kablan will chair the committee, who has expertise in machine intelligence, big data, analytics and computational finance.

“Malta and the MSE are quite fortunate to have at our disposal our country’s preeminent technologist and a globally recognized expert on blockchain technology. Dr. Kablan has a proven track record within the technology space, evidenced by his latest start-up Hippo Data, the first Maltese company to ever be selected into the London Microsoft Accelerator Program,” Joseph Portelli, Malta Stock Exchange Chairman, said.

Stock exchanges around the world are investigating and identifying the applications of the distributed ledger technology. Scotland plans to start an exchange ‘SCOTEX’ with the help of latest blockchain technology for its clearing process. On the other hand, earlier in October, Sydney Stock Exchange built a blockchain smart register for real-time issuance and allocation of equity securities.

“With Dr. Kablan’s expertise and the Malta Stock Exchange’s leadership it is hoped the ground work will be laid for Malta’s and the MSE’s first blockchain application,” he added.
