LAS VEGAS, Jan. 06, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Three brothers from Maine are leveraging the Sensoria Developer Kit to deliver an innovative solution for patients suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia.
The Maine based team and Washington based Sensoria are announcing their collaboration and the development of a new mobile application named upBed during CES 2016.
upBed is a smartphone application for the patient, family members and other caregivers, powered by Sensoria’s IoT enabled smart garments. The application connects to Sensoria’s smart sock, detects when a patient leaves the bed, and immediately notifies caregivers via text messages.
According to the Alzheimer's Association, over 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's disease, and 60% of these individuals are prone to wandering. Patients in later stages of the disease are also prone to falling, requiring caregivers to be present when they wake up. Existing solutions in the market use pagers or bedside alarms for notification, and various technologies for detection. “We feel the caregiver market is primed for innovation, and we’re excited to apply Sensoria’s wearable technology to this new market,” said Aron Semle, one of the brothers working on upBed. “Caregivers are hungry for solutions that make their life a bit easier, and with Sensoria’s technology we can make bedside detection non-invasive and easy for both the patient and caregiver.”
The solution leverages Sensoria’s smart sock and Bluetooth electronics to detect when a patient is falling asleep, sleeping, and awake, and can send a text message to up to three people in the circle of care. The patient simply wears the smart socks infused with textile pressure sensors while sleeping. The application is currently in beta and is expected to be released early this year.
“The Sensoria team applauds the Semle brothers for their innovative effort to help patients suffering from dementia and their caregivers,” said Alick Law, Director of Business Development at Sensoria. “We are excited that the Sensoria Development Kit has the potential to transform health and healthcare.”
The three brothers from Maine, known as the “Semle brothers”, were introduced to Sensoria’s technology when competing in a IoT Hackathon sponsored by Aizoon, a system integrator focused on IoT solutions, which awarded the prize to the Semle brothers for their innovative approach: “At first we were looking for a solution to track how often plant workers were on their feet,” says Semle. “Sensoria provides a superior, non-invasive way to do this, and working with their SDK technology platform was easy. It was a natural next step to work with them on this new application.”
