Kremlin Says No Decision Yet on Putin-Trump December Summit

The Kremlin said Thursday that Russia has not yet decided whether President Vladimir Putin will attend a December G20 meeting in Miami, where a potential summit with U.S. President Donald Trump could take place. Moscow also said discussions about an agenda for any Putin-Trump meeting would be premature.

The comments followed confirmation from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio that Washington had invited Putin to the G20 gathering in Florida. Rubio said Wednesday that the event could provide an opportunity for Putin to meet Trump as well as engage with other world leaders.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia appreciated the invitation but would need to review and coordinate the proposal before reaching a final decision.

Peskov declined to speculate about what Putin and Trump could discuss if the meeting goes ahead, stressing that Moscow has not yet confirmed Putin's participation.

A possible Putin-Trump summit would draw attention amid continuing diplomatic efforts surrounding the war in Ukraine. Trump has sought to negotiate an end to the conflict since returning to the White House in January 2025, but those efforts have yet to produce a breakthrough.

The Russian and U.S. presidents previously met in Anchorage, Alaska, in August 2025 as part of negotiations focused on ending the Ukraine war.

Russia, meanwhile, continues to maintain that any agreement should deliver a broader peace settlement rather than a temporary ceasefire. Peskov reiterated that position Thursday as questions grew over whether the proposed December meeting could provide another opening for high-level U.S.-Russia diplomacy.

For now, the Kremlin has left both Putin's attendance at the Miami G20 gathering and the prospect of direct talks with Trump unresolved. Moscow said the U.S. invitation will be considered through diplomatic channels before an official decision is announced.
