North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has signaled that the country will continue to advance its missile capabilities over the next five years, underscoring Pyongyang’s ongoing focus on strengthening its military deterrence. According to a report released Friday by state-run media outlet KCNA, Kim made the remarks while visiting major munitions enterprises during the final quarter of 2025.
During the inspections, Kim emphasized that North Korea’s missile and shell production sector is of “paramount importance” in bolstering the nation’s war deterrent. KCNA said he stressed the strategic role of weapons manufacturing in safeguarding national security amid what Pyongyang frequently describes as rising external threats. The comments reinforce North Korea’s long-standing policy of prioritizing military development alongside economic goals.
The report also revealed that Kim ratified draft documents aimed at modernizing key munitions enterprises. These documents are expected to be submitted to an upcoming major party congress scheduled for early 2026. The congress is anticipated to outline North Korea’s next five-year development plan, which traditionally sets economic, industrial, and defense priorities for the country.
Kim’s recent activities highlight an intensified focus on military modernization. Just a day before the KCNA report, North Korea disclosed that Kim oversaw the construction of an 8,700-ton nuclear-powered submarine, a significant development that could expand the country’s naval strike capabilities. Notably, Kim was accompanied by his daughter during the visit, fueling speculation about her growing public role and potential status as a future leader.
The same disclosure included reports of successful test-firing of long-range surface-to-air missiles, further underscoring Pyongyang’s efforts to enhance its air defense systems. Together, these developments suggest that missile development, advanced weapons production, and defense modernization will remain central to North Korea’s strategic planning.
As North Korea prepares for its next party congress, Kim Jong Un’s statements and actions point to a continued emphasis on strengthening military capabilities, particularly missile and weapons production, as part of a broader five-year national development strategy.
