Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee said on Tuesday that media tycoon and prominent democracy campaigner Jimmy Lai deserved the 20-year prison sentence imposed by a court earlier this week, arguing that the punishment reflected the serious harm Lai had caused to society. Lee’s comments came a day after the high-profile ruling, which has drawn international attention and renewed debate over press freedom and political dissent in the city.
Jimmy Lai, one of Hong Kong’s most outspoken critics of Beijing, was sentenced on Monday to a total of 20 years in jail. The court found him guilty on two counts of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces, as well as one count related to the publication of seditious materials. Prosecutors argued that Lai’s actions posed a threat to national security, while supporters have described the case as a significant blow to freedom of expression in Hong Kong.
Speaking to reporters, John Lee emphasized that the rule of law remained central to Hong Kong’s governance and said the judiciary had acted independently.
