Global Geopolitical Series: Turkey calls on Muslim countries to prevent countries in following U.S. to shift embassy to Jerusalem

Turkey on Friday called on Muslim countries to enhance steps to prevent other countries around the world to follow U.S. decision to shift its Israeli embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem at the beginning of an extraordinary summit of Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which was called by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan by the powers vested in him as the current President of the Organization.

Erdogan had called the meeting to protest the U.S. embassy shift, which has taken place earlier this week on Monday, and to protest the reported deaths of scores of Palestinian protesters who tried to illegally crossover the Israeli border as a part of a movement, which has been taking place for several weeks, where Palestinians are marching to claim what they call forceful occupation of their land by Israel.

Speaking at the Summit, Turkish foreign minister said, “In the final declaration, we will emphasize the status of the Palestine issue for our community, and that we will not allow changing the status of the historic city…. We must prevent other countries from following the U.S. example.”

So far, only two countries (Guatemala, and Paraguay) other than the United States have decided to move their embassy to Jerusalem. Romania is the only European country to have expressed intention to shift its embassy to Jerusalem.

Turkey has taken a tough stance on the issue and has recalled its ambassadors to the United States and Israel and expelled Israeli ambassador from the country.
