Global Geopolitical Series: PA President’s call to violence shows desperation for prominence

In the era of Trump, Palestinian Authority (PA) seems to be fraying in its prominence and its President Mahmoud Abbas is reportedly losing his grip on many Palestinian people who are tired of constant battle and deaths in the region. A Hareetz poll strongly indicated that majority of the Palestinians want peace with Israel and the approval rating of the PA President has collapsed as he shut himself away from the ‘deal of the century’ negotiations with the United States, in response to President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The recent negotiations between Israel and Hamas leaders in Cairo to reach a cease-fire agreement along the Gaza border also shows the fading influence of the Palestinian Authority. As Hamas continued its negotiations with Israeli and Egyptian authorities in Cairo, PA leader Mahmoud Abbas accused the negotiations as an attempt by the United States aimed at separating the Gaza strip from West Bank. PA fears that such an agreement would pave the way for President Trump’s deal of the century and dilute the demand of the Palestinian Authority.

To add pressure on Hamas, PA President Mahmoud Abbas has announced that it would not serve as an ATM machine to Hamas if it agrees to an agreement with Israel and called on its protesters to increase resistance in the West Bank to make the Authority relevant just like Hamas did before negotiations. Not Just Abbas, but senior leaders like PA Secretary General Saeb Erekat have been demonizing the truce possibility along Gaza, which shows that they are more desperate than ever to have their important felt.
