Global Geopolitical Series: Key updates from across the world

Here are some key events to keep a tab on,

  • Russia-U.S. - Syria: Last week, Syrian President Bashar al Assad visited Russia President Vladimir Putin and after the discussion, President Putin declared that the Syrian government is ready for a political process which could ultimately lead to peace in the country.    
     
  • Russia-UK-Skripal: Former Russian spy Sergei Skripal, whose poisoning with a nerve agent in the United Kingdom triggered a diplomatic crisis with Russia, has been discharged from a British hospital. However, his whereabouts are currently confidential.
     
  • Korean Peninsula: Tensions rose last week in the Korean peninsula as Kim regime canceled a preparatory summit with South Korea in response to its joint military drill with the United States. It also threatened to cancel the upcoming meeting with the Trump administration over protest to White House national security advisor John Bolton, who suggested that Libyan model could be used in North Korean denuclearization. President Trump commented to assure North Korea that no regime change will be there and Libyan model will not be used.
     
  • Palestine - Israel: Violence continues in Gaza strip as Palestinians march against what they call is Israel’s occupation of their land. Scores of people have been killed and wounded in the latest spark of violence, where Palestinians stage a rally to return to what they call is their homeland, forcefully occupied by Israel. On the day of the U.S. embassy open last week on Monday, reportedly more than 50 Palestinian protesters were killed. Several countries like Turkey have taken a tough stance on the issue.     
     
  • Turkey-Israel-United States: In response to the opening of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem, Turkey recalled its ambassadors from the United States. The diplomatic row between Turkey and Israel took a turn for the worst over the embassy and reported killings of Palestinian protesters in Gaza. Both countries have expelled each other’s consular general in response.
