Global Geopolitical Series: Fresh U.S. sanctions target Iran’s top leaders’ including Khamenei; Russia vows to counter

The United States in response to the latest happenings in the Middle East where Iran downed a United States’ spy drone and allegedly attacked two oil tankers in the Gulf, tightened its sanctions screw against Iran’s top leaders including the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. President Trump signed an executive order directing U.S. Treasury and State department to impose further sanctions on Iranian leaders. Here is the link to the full executive order, https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/executive-order-imposing-sanctions-respect-iran/ The move came after President Trump called-off a military strike against Iran calling it disproportionate as it would have killed 150 Iranians in response to the downing of an unmanned drone.

Iran has, however, shrugged off the latest sanctions saying it would have no impact at all, while its closest ally Russia called the latest unilateral sanctions by the United States as illegal. Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said that his country along with its partners would take up steps to counter fresh sanctions against Iran.

Last year, President Trump unilaterally pulled the US out of the 2015 nuclear deal meant to curb Iran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. The US has since imposed a slate of sanctions on the Islamic Republic designed to choke off Iranian oil sales and cripple its economy. Trump, who has waged a maximum pressure campaign against Iran, has also said the US is prepared to negotiate with the Islamic Republic with no preconditions.
