Global Geopolitical Series: EU’s foreign policy chief warns Israel against demolishing Bedouin village

The European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini has issued a warning against Israel over the controversial demolition of a Bedouin village. The attempted demolition of the Bedouin village named Al-Khan Al-Ahmar has triggered widespread international criticism has posed serious doubts over the peace between Israelis and Palestinians. The village lies in the east of Jerusalem.

Speaking on Wednesday, Mogherini said that the village is situated in a very sensitive area and the European Union is closely monitoring the situation. She warned that Israel’s plans to demolish the village in order to build new settlements are in contradiction with the international law.

Mogherini called on Israel to reconsider the demolition decision and abide by international law. There are reportedly 190 Palestinians living in Al-Khan Al-Ahmar. And the village also has a school that provides education services to 170 students from surrounding areas.

According to Palestinian observers, Israel will seize 12,000 dunums from East Jerusalem to the Dead Sea. If it goes through, the project will help isolate occupied East Jerusalem, separating it from the rest of the West Bank.

However, Israeli Supreme Court has issued a temporary injunction against the demolition orders.
